Jan Palach Date: 19 January 2014 | Jan Palach, a young Czech student during the communist era who had set himself on fire in protest at the on-going Soviet invasion of August 1968, subsequently died on the 19th January 1969. Many Czech people, especially the older generation, make their way to the Memorial to the Victims of Communism near the statue at the top of Wenceslas Square, and to Olsanske Cemetery to lay flowers or to light a candle in his memory. | |
