2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship

Czech Republic hosts the 2015 Ice Hockey World Championship, with Group Stage games taking place in Prague and Ostrava and the finals at the capital's O2 Arena. The Czechs take on Olympic gold and silver medallists Canada and Sweden in Prague in the preliminary round, in a rare chance to see a host of stars of European and North American hockey go head to head.

Student-celebrated spring festival which takes place throughout the Czech Republic. In Prague this manifests itself as a parade starting at Jan Palacha, near the horse at the top of Wenceslas Square, ending at the Old Town Square.

Petrin Hill & Observation Tower

Petrin Hill is the romantic setting for couples in love to spend a few hours together, after placing flowers at the feet of a statue of the celebrated 19th century poet, Karel Hynek Macha. Macha created several myths, a few illegitimate offspring and an epic poem called 'May'. Thus, lovers make a pilgrimage in his name and find a quiet corner to, well, er, let's say no more.

Prague Marathon

The Prague Marathon is one of the most beautiful marathon courses in the world. The race winds through the historic city centre, over bridges and along the Vltava River. 9000 runners are expected.
The race is held on Sunday 3rd May, but the build up starts on Saturday 2nd May with a weekend of activities including a relay marathon and a corporate team marathon.

Czech Beer Festival in Prague
Czech Beer Festival in Prague

The Czech Beer Festival in Prague is the largest gastronomic event in the Czech Republic. Seating for 4,000 visitors is arranged on long benches inside marquees and in the open air. There are 100 Czech beers to choose from, sourced from large breweries, regional breweries and micro-breweries, plus food specialties to taste and live bands to entertain. No need to pre-book, just turn up.
Price: Adults - 45czk.
Students (ISIC/ITIC/IYTC) | Seniors (65yrs+) | Children - free.
Large beer: 45czk | £1.35 | €1.65 | $2.25.

Liberation Day (1945) - Public Holiday

Public holiday. Though the Soviet tanks rolled in to liberate the Czech Republic a day later than elsewhere, on 9 May 1945, VE Day is celebrated annually on the 8 May in line with the other former Communist countries "liberated" by the Russians.

A unique sound and light spectacle electrifies the river. Gather on Charles Bridge or along the banks of the river, or book a river cruise or a table at a river restaurant to enjoy a flotilla of historical boats, Baroque music and fireworks.

The Prague Food Festival celebrates the culinary skills of the top restaurant chefs in the Czech Republic. The festival takes place in a large outdoor setting, in the grounds of Prague Castle. Wander around the stalls and sample local and international dishes, along with wines, sparking wines and Czech beers. There is also a children’s area with entertainment and cooking instruction.
Tickets are available in advance, but the system can be complicated so we advise buying tickets on the day (there are plenty of tickets).
Price: Adults 500czk (includes food sampling starter pack). Children (0-5yrs) free.
Where: Royal Gardens at the back of Prague Castle.
There are 4 entrances, the easiest to find is beside Lvi Dvur Restaurant (tram 22 stops outside - tram stop Prazsky hrad).

Travel: Metro station Malostranska (line A). Then take tram 22 up the hill and alight at Prazsky hrad (Prague Castle) tram stop.

Prague Opera
Prague Opera, Ballet & Classical Concert listings & tickets
Dates: May 2015
Prague is famous for opera, ballet and classical concerts. Performances take place in three magnificent opera houses, in stunning concert halls and in an array of beautiful historic churches. Tickets are reasonably priced, so shows often sell out. Advance reservations are therefore highly recommended.

Visit the Prague theatre for a typically Czech experience.
Black light theatre is a highly charged mix of dynamic dance, mime, singers, film, and state-of-the-art visual and sound effects. And marionette theatre features giant puppets. Shows are highly visual to appeal to adults and children of all ages and nationalities. Advance reservations are highly recommended.
