Mama's offers a modern twist on traditional Czech cuisine, with the addition of some fine International dishes.
The restaurant is set on Bethlehem Square (Betlémské náměstí), a lovely part of the Old Town just a few minutes walk from both the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square.
Mama's is popular with local Czechs and ex-pats as well as tourists, which ensures a lively ambience most nights and good value food and drinks.
The restaurant was recently reconstructed, and has a brand new kitchen (it was formerly called Papas!). The result is a wonderfully clean-cut environment to dine in, and a good standard of local food which is tasty, plentiful and well presented.
Mama's may focus on Czech cuisine, but the contemporary spin on the food ensures there is plenty to tempt a more international palate. Dishes include duck, venison, tender beef steaks and other meats, as well as pasta, large salads, salmon and fish.
The new chef, Martin Havel, comes to Mama's with a CV that boasts some of the country's best restaurants, so at this price range guests will be pleasantly surprised by the food presentation.
For drinks, there are beers on tap, bottled beers, Czech and International wines, and an extensive list of spirits. At just 38czk (£1.20/ €1.35/ $1.90) for a large beer and 58czk (£1.85/ €2.15/ $2.90) for a glass of house wine, you will be hard pushed to find better prices in a comparable restaurant.
The atmosphere at Mama's is relaxed, with cool background music kept low early on to allow for conversation. At weekends, it builds later on to get you in the party mood.
During the summer Mama's has seating outside on Bethlehem Square; a fine spot for al fresco dining.
Mama's suits visitors looking for good, but fairly informal dining. And after dinner, carry on with the drinks as long as you like.
It may be informal, but you still need to book - Prague locals normally book ahead before going to Mama's (this also applies to other popular restaurants), so without a reservation you risk being turned away.
For a similarly good value restaurant and bar in the New Town, near Wenceslas Square, we recommend Sherwood.
Good informal dining for all types of groups, from friends and family occasions to hen nights and stag parties. Mama's offers some of the best value food and drink in the city centre, and you can stay on afterwards for drinks. Advance reservations are essential.
