The highly acclaimed Lobkowicz Palace is part of the Prague Castle complex.

After 40 years of Communist rule, and a further 12 years seeking its restitution, the Lobkowicz family finally regained ownership of their palace in 2002.

Following several years of restoration, Lobkowicz Palace is now open to the public as a museum, displaying exhibits drawn from the extensive Lobkowicz family collections. An audio tour transports visitors around the museum.

The museum traces the history of the Czech lands and its people through the possessions of this unique family. Among the many exhibits on display are works of art from the 12th-20th century, a gun collection, musical instruments, rare music manuscripts from Mozart and Beethoven, and glorious Old Master paintings by Canaletto, Brueghel the Elder, Velazquez and others.

Lobkowicz Palace was originally named the Pernštejn Palace. It was built in the mid-16th century by Czech nobleman Jaroslav of Pernštejn.

It has witnessed some of Bohemia’s significant historical events. In 1618 the infamous “defenestration” of Prague took place, when Protestant rebels threw their Catholic Imperial ministers from the windows of Prague Castle. Surviving the fall, the ministers took refuge in the adjoining Lobkowicz Palace.

Lobkowicz Palace has undergone a number of changes over the years, but fortunately all periods of its architectural history can be seen. Of particular note are the palace chapel and the magnificent reception rooms, known today as the Concert Hall, the Balcony Room and the Marble Hall.

Lobkowicz Palace is not included in tours of Prague Castle, as it belongs to the Lobkowicz family. Visitors must buy a separate ticket, available at the palace (Adults 275czk. Children 175czk.)

Classical Concerts
As well as the museum, the Concert Hall at Lobkowicz Palace is the wonderful setting for lunchtime classical concerts.
