The Estates Theatre in Prague, opened in 1783, is Prague's oldest theatre and its finest neo-classical building. It is indeed one of the most beautiful historical theatres in Europe.
The Estates Theatre has a unique charm which cannot be relayed by pictures or through words. Once inside, one can almost feel the spiritual presence of the supremely talented musicians, directors, artists, poets and playwrights who have passed through its doors.
The Estates Theatre will be forever linked with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the musical genius whose life and works had such an impact on the city.
Mozart stayed and worked in Prague on a couple of occasions, working on operas which would later appear at the Estates Theatre.
In 1786 the Marriage of Figaro was first performed in Prague at the Estates Theatre. Then, in 1787, Mozart himself conducted the world premiere of Don Giovanni here, to a packed house. The public simply adored him.
Consequently, today the Estates Theatre's main operatic production is Don Giovanni. More works by Mozart and by other composers feature from time to time, as well as ballet and classical concerts.
The Estates Theatre is located in between the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, a mere two minutes walk from either.
