Municipal House

Municipal House in Prague is the city's foremost Art Nouveau building, and one of the finest in the whole of Europe.

Municipal House is a magnificent complex of rooms, serving a variety of functions, with a glorious concert hall at its heart.

Other attractions inside Municipal House include an elegant French restaurant, a Czech beer hall style restaurant, a stylish café, the first American bar in the Czech Republic and several music salons.

Municipal House opened in 1912, having been constructed on the site of the former Royal Court Palace. It then gained fame on the 28th October 1918 when the historic proclamation of the independent state of Czechoslovakia took place here.

Municipal House is the main attraction on Republic Square. It stands next to the Powder Gate, one of the original entrances to Prague's Old Town. Both the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square are just a few minutes walk away.

It is a beautiful building from all aspects. The outside has intricate stonework, gold trimmings, frescos and stained glass windows.

Inside, a marble staircase leads you to the huge Smetana Concert Hall, which is only rivalled in size by the Dvorák Hall at the Rudolfinum. The Smetana is an architectural masterpiece, a mix of carved white stone and gold, illuminated by hundreds of lights, and with frescos by Karel Spillar adorning the walls.

Classical concerts in the Smetana boast some of the largest orchestras to play the city. Indeed Municipal House is home to the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.

The first-class Francouzska Restaurant is a delightful place to enjoy French, Czech and International cuisine in grand surroundings. While downstairs is Plzenska Restaurant, which serves more traditional Czech fare in a lively, beer hall style atmosphere.

Next to Plzenska Restaurant is the swish American Bar, the perfect place for a pre-dinner or pre-concert drink, with a range of cocktails, spirits, beers and wines to choose from.

Municipal House also hosts exhibitions and even the occasional ball.
