New Year's Eve is party night in Prague, and the restaurants, bars, clubs and river cruises fill up quickly. The atmosphere builds throughout the evening, reaching its peak at midnight, when crowds gather along the river, in the city squares and on high ground to watch the fireworks and welcome in the New Year.

Prague New Year's Eve is one of Europe's most popular year-end celebrations. Thousands of visitors are expected, and a vibrant party atmosphere spreads throughout the city: across the streets and squares, along the river and in the restaurants, bars and clubs.

The celebrations appeal to everyone: the young and old, the quiet and romantic and the wild and carefree. Prague truly offers something for everyone.

Some venues host elegant, all-inclusive international-style parties featuring fine food, drinks, music and dancing. Others, such as the Traditional Czech Night and Medieval Banquet, offer an evening of lively local hospitality.

Bars and clubs typically sell tickets for New Year's Eve, hosting parties that continue well into the early hours.

Restaurants either serve their regular à la carte menu or prepare a special New Year's Eve menu. Options range from an intimate dinner for two to a full evening of gourmet food, entertainment, live music and dancing.

Then there are the ever-popular New Year's Eve river cruises, which are among the first events to sell out. Tickets are available now for two of Prague's premier cruises:

Finally, while most visitors book an event in advance, some prefer to keep things spontaneous. They seek out Czech pubs open to walk-ins, enjoy a beer at the Christmas Markets and try their luck finding a club that will let them in after midnight.

Fireworks have long been a highlight of New Year's Eve celebrations in Prague. As midnight approaches, crowds gather in key areas of the city, and the atmosphere buzzes with anticipation.

There is no official fireworks display, and regulations governing who can set off fireworks and where have been tightened in recent years. However, this does not deter the locals. Czechs absolutely LOVE setting off fireworks and tend to ignore such restrictions (they do have a rebellious streak!). Visitors can expect to see plenty of fireworks before, during and well after midnight.

In central Prague, hand-held, ground-based and aerial fireworks are set off by countless individuals in and around the Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square and along the Vltava River.

Additionally, aerial fireworks are launched from the high ground surrounding the historic centre. These can be seen by guests on river cruises, by spectators and restaurant diners along both banks of the river, especially near Charles Bridge, and by revellers seeking out elevated viewpoints in and around the Lesser Town, such as Petřín Hill, the area around Prague Castle and Letná Park (Letenské sady).

Where to Watch Prague New Year's Eve Fireworks

River cruises, restaurants, bars and clubs time their entertainment programmes around midnight so that guests can enjoy the fireworks. Many include sparkling wine or Champagne in the ticket price for the midnight toast.

Guests on the river cruises can usually enjoy excellent views of the fireworks either from inside the boat or out on deck.

Diners lucky enough to be in a restaurant with a view can watch the fireworks from their table or head out on the terrace.

However, many people will have to walk a short distance to see the fireworks, as most restaurants, bars and clubs do not have a direct view. The good news is that guests attending any event in the city centre (Prague 1) are generally within a 10-minute walk of a good vantage point. They can leave their venue before midnight, watch the fireworks and return afterwards. Most venues featured in our planner allow re-entry.

OPTION 1: FIREWORKS BY THE RIVER

Charles Bridge is the focal point for fireworks by the river, which are mostly launched from elevated areas of the city, such as Letná Park (Letenské sady), near Prague Castle.

With a backdrop of the Old Town on one side of the river and Prague Castle and the Lesser Town on the other, revellers on river cruises and on both banks of the river can admire a stunning combination of fireworks set against historic landmarks and shimmering reflections in the water.

Where to Watch Fireworks Over the Vltava River:

a. River Cruises: Boats gather near Charles Bridge at midnight. Depending on their seating, guests may be able to watch the fireworks from their table or they can head out on deck;

b. Stand in the Streets: Stand on Charles Bridge or along the streets that run beside the river. The Old Town side of the river is the most popular because Prague Castle provides a stunning backdrop as you look across the water;

c. Riverside Restaurants: Some restaurants on both sides of the river offer good views of the fireworks. Certain venues have large windows offering views from inside, while others feature terraces and outdoor areas with panoramic views;

d. Hillside Restaurants: Some restaurants in the Lesser Town, on Petřín Hill and near Prague Castle have large windows or terraces, allowing guests to enjoy the fireworks from elevated vantage points;

e. Letná Park: This elevated park in Prague 7, just outside the city centre, is popular with local Czechs, who gather on the hillside, especially near the Metronome.

OPTION 2: FIREWORKS AT THE SQUARES

Traditionally, standing in Old Town Square or Wenceslas Square at midnight can be pretty hair-raising. With large crowds and fireworks seemingly everywhere, the atmosphere is electric.

Aerial fireworks light up the skyline, but the most dramatic displays are the huge blasts and flashes coming from street level. In 2025, despite an official ban, local Czechs launched countless fireworks in the squares, and the show went on for hours. What happens in 2026 is anybody's guess!

Whatever the scale of the fireworks this year, the Christmas Markets at both squares will be in full swing, the surrounding restaurants and bars will be packed and revellers will be toasting the New Year with bottles of Czech beer and Bohemia Sekt ("Czech Champagne").

Where to Watch Fireworks at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square:

a. Stand in a Square: Many restaurants, bars and clubs in the Old Town and New Town are within a 10-minute walk of either Old Town Square or Wenceslas Square. If you're at a venue without a view, check that re-entry is permitted, grab your coat and head to one of the squares.

b. Restaurants at the Squares: Some restaurants have large windows offering views of the festivities from your table, while others feature terraces with direct views of the action.

OPTION 3: A VENUE WITH ITS OWN FIREWORKS DISPLAY

The New Year's Eve Traditional Czech Night is an all-inclusive excursion to a grand timber-framed restaurant in the grounds of a manor house. Because it is outside the city centre, the venue puts on its own fireworks display.

Other Entertainment on New Year's Eve

Prague also offers plenty of entertainment on New Year's Eve and in the days around it. Classical concerts, opera and ballet performances are magical at this time of year, taking place in grand concert halls, ornate opera houses and theatres, historic churches and Baroque palaces:
