| The highly acclaimed Lobkowicz Palace (Lobkowiczký palác) is part of Prague Castle, although because it is privately owned it requires a separate ticket to visit. The Lobkowicz Palace Museum is the public areas of the palace, a series of exquisitely decorated rooms displaying world-famous 12th-20th century paintings and works of art, and other priceless exhibits from the Lobkowicz family collections. On display are masterpieces by Canaletto, Bruegel the Elder and Velázquez; Medieval and Renaissance artworks; historical weapons and armour; a beautiful array of ceramics, including Delftware; rare musical instruments; and, hand-annotated manuscripts of composers Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn.
The Baroque Concert Hall is the most beautiful room at Lobkowicz Palace, with a stunning 17th century ceiling adorned with frescos. It is the magnificent setting for lunchtime classical concerts.
Other rooms of note include the enchanting reception rooms, the Marble Hall and Balcony Room, as well as the ornate Lobkowicz Palace chapel.
Lobkowicz Palace was built in the mid-16th century by Czech nobleman Jaroslav of Pernštejn. Originally named the Pernštejn Palace, it entered the Lobkowicz family by way of marriage in 1603. The history of the palace reflects some of Bohemia’s most significant historical events.
In 1618, when Protestant rebels threw their Catholic Imperial ministers from the windows of Prague Castle (the infamous “defenestration”), the survivors fled to Lobkowicz Palace to take refuge, at great political risk to the Lobkowicz family.
In the 20th century during the communist era, Lobkowicz Palace was confiscated by the state. It then took 40 years of communist rule, and a further 12 years seeking its restitution, for the Lobkowicz family to regain ownership. In 2002, with the palace back under their control, the Lobkowicz family embarked on extensive renovation works, the results of which can be enjoyed by visitors today. Fortunately, all periods of the palace's architectural history survive.
For refreshments, the Lobkowicz Palace Café offers drinks and casual dining. Tip: sit on the café's balcony to enjoy panoramic views over Prague.
HOW TO VISIT LOBKOWICZ PALACE Admission to Lobkowicz Palace is not included in the Prague Castle Ticket, a separate ticket is required. Three ways to visit Lobkowicz Palace: 1. Tour TicketA Tour Ticket allows visitors to tour the Lobkowicz Palace Museum with an audio guide. The audio guide (included in the price) is available in Czech, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish or Ukrainian. It can also be accessed on a phone.
The tour narration lasts one hour. However, the tour is at your own pace and there is a lot to see, so be prepared to spend considerably longer. Price: Adult 340 CZK.
Senior (65+)/Student/Child (7-15yrs:) 270 CZK. Buy tickets at Lobkowicz Palace on the day - advance reservations are not necessary. 2. Concert Ticket The beautiful 17th century Baroque Concert Hall at Lobkowicz Palace is the setting for lunchtime classical concerts, held daily at 13:00. Price: 580 CZK.
