Prague restaurant guide
Cervena Tabulka is one of Prague's 'hidden gems', a great little restaurant tucked away on a quiet street, on the edge of the Old Town.
Cervena Tabulka (Red Table) is just 10 minutes walk from the Old Town Square and not much more from Wenceslas Square, yet once inside their courtyard, you could be out in the countryside.
The interior of the restaurant comprises several small rooms, each furnished with an assortment of knick-knack's. The various wall paintings give it a cosy, cheerful feel. The red sections recall the work of civilization painter Kamil Lhotak.
In the winter, the open fires give the whole restaurant a lovely, warm smell of burning wood.
In the summer, there is the option of dining in the garden courtyard. This is a peaceful oasis amongst the city life. And is one of the better al fresco places to dine around the Old Town.
Cervena Tabulka presents a gastronomic experience at reasonable prices. Starters range from roasted foie gras and duck pâté to veal carpaccio, smoked eel and a delightful strong beef broth.
Main courses change with the seasons, so expect some surprises, but there is generally some nice succulent beef steaks, fresh fish and Lamb knee as well as Czech style duck.
Desserts include a vanilla crème brûlée and a potato curd ravioli.
Next door to Cervena Tabulka is a respected old style wine bar, Grand Cru, with whom they collaborate to purchase wines. This ensures the restaurant stocks some of the best Czech wines, and some fine international bottles.
The professional service, the quality of the food, the reasonable prices and the atmosphere make Cervena Tabulka worth stretching the legs for. Once the preserve of Czechs 'in the know', Cervena Tabulka is now building a reputation amongst international visitors.
