The New Stage Theatre (Nová scéna) was established in 1958 as the world's first multimedia theatre. It was originally called Laterna magika Theatre.

The shows are called 'Laterna magika', and are a variation of black light theatre: colourfully dressed mime artists and energetic dancers tell the story, with little or no spoken words.

Performances combine playful, expressive acting with dynamic dance routines, which range from modern dance to ballet.

But whereas black light theatre use static backdrops, in Laterna magika performances, film and computer generated visual effects are displayed on a huge screen behind the mime artists and dancers on stage.

The performers interact with the film on the screen; gradually appearing to blend in with the moving images, causing the audience to question: what is film and what is real?

Productions are vibrant and fast moving, accompanied by striking visual effects and dramatic sounds, and often with an emotional edge and comedic touches.

The New Stage Theatre is a huge glass structure situated next to the National Theatre in Prague. It is an icon of the communist era, designed to portray a sense of power.

The theatre is a Czech cultural monument. Most Czech families travel to Prague to watch a Laterna magika show at least once in their lives, which ensures there is a mixed audience of Czech people and tourists.

Shows are suitable for an international audience of both adults and children (ideally 10 years and over).

The theatre is 5 minutes walk from Wenceslas Square and 10 minutes from the Old Town Square and Charles Bridge.
