PERFORMANCE DETAILS The Secret is the renowned Czech composer Bedřich Smetana’s seventh opera. Completed in May 1878, it was first staged at the National Theatre on 12 May 1885. It later gained popularity under conductor Karel Kovařovic, who recognised its mature qualities.
Written in collaboration with librettist Eliška Krásnohorská, the opera’s themes echo works such as Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Ladislav Stroupežnický’s Our Uppish and Defiant Fellows.
The Secret is set in a small Czech town and centres on a feud between two families: the Malinas and the Kalinas. Despite the hostility between their fathers, Blaženka Malina and Vít Kalina fall in love.
The family conflicts are resolved when an old note leads Kalina to a treasure, though the true worth of what is uncovered proves unexpected.
Directed by Ondřej Havelka, The Secret is presented as a visually striking production, offering a blend of music, theatre and humour.
