Classical Concert by Bedřich Smetana

PERFORMANCE DETAILS

'Concert for the Republic: My Country' is performed at the Smetana Hall at Municipal House, the grandest concert hall in Prague, by the Prague Symphony Orchestra.

This annual concert marks the most important date in the history of Czechia, 28th October 1918, when Czechoslovakia was created following the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Independent Czechoslovak State Day is a public holiday, and no event reflects its significance better than 'Concert for the Republic'. It was from the balcony of Municipal House that the proclamation of independence was made in 1918, and the country’s pride in the works of Bedrich Smetana, one of its finest composers, remains strong.

My Country (Má vlast) is a set of six symphonic poems composed by Smetana between 1874 and 1879. Each one captures a different aspect of the Bohemian landscape, history or mythology, expressing Smetana's nationalistic pride. Together, they create a vivid portrait of Bohemia, blending natural beauty, legend and historical character.

Established in 1934, the Prague Symphony Orchestra is based at Municipal House and is the official orchestra of the City of Prague. Representing Czech culture at the highest level, the orchestra has toured extensively in Europe, the USA and Japan, and has built an impressive catalogue of TV, radio and audio recordings.
