Municipal House (Obecní dům) in Prague is the city's foremost Art Nouveau building, one of the finest of its kind in Europe.

Municipal House contains a magnificent complex of rooms, including the grandest concert hall in Prague (Smetana Hall), an elegant modern Czech restaurant, a beer hall restaurant, a traditional café, the first American bar in the Czech Republic, plus a suite of salons and exhibition rooms.

It is a beautiful building from all aspects. Its exterior gleams with intricate stonework, gold trimmings, frescos and stained glass windows.

Inside, a huge marble staircase leads to the glorious Smetana Concert Hall. This architectural masterpiece is constructed of carved white stone and gold, and illuminated by hundreds of lights. Frescos by Karel Spillar adorn the walls.

Classical concerts in the Smetana Hall boast the largest orchestras to play the city. Indeed Municipal House is home to the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.

All Municipal House concerts listed on Prague Experience are held in the Smetana Hall, not one of the minor salons. For concert listings and to book tickets: Prague concerts.

Municipal House is the main attraction on Republic Square. Next to it is the Powder Tower, one of the original entrances to the Old Town.

Municipal House opened in 1912, having been constructed on the site of the former Royal Court Palace.

On the 28th October 1918, the historic proclamation of the independent state of Czechoslovakia took place here.

On the ground floor of the building, the first-class Municipal House Restaurant is a delightful place for fine dining, looking out over Republic Square.

On the lower ground floor, Municipal House Beer Hall restaurant serves excellent traditional Czech fare in a lively atmosphere.

Next to the Beer Hall is the swish Tretter's American Bar. Ideal for pre-concert or pre-dinner drinks, it serves cocktails, spirits, beers, wines and sparkling wines.

Meanwhile, on the side of the building is the Municipal House Café, the place to head to for fresh coffee and a slice of cake in traditional surroundings at any time of day.

Finally, Municipal House hosts exhibitions, which are all listed in Prague events.
