Novomestsky Pivovar (the New Town Brewery) is situated close to Wenceslas Square
, in the centre of Prague, and is a traditional Czech pub style restaurant and micro-brewery rolled into one.
The interior of Novomestsky Pivovar is a labyrinth. A mix of styles from Gothic halls to early 20th century design are spread across many rooms and alcoves, on several different levels.
The cuisine theme is hearty Czech food at good prices. The menu is fairly expansive, with a variety of meats, fish and vegetarian options on offer. For drinks, visitors can sample the brewery's own Pilsner beer. Wine, spirits and soft drinks are also available.
The service at Novomestsky Pivovar leaves a little to be desired; food is served fast enough, but as with several of the large traditional Czech restaurants in Prague, the waiters can be a bit grumpy and unsmiling.
During the day, you might get a table if you are passing. However, in the evening reservations are essential, both for groups and individuals. This is a popular restaurant for groups to start their night off.
A short tour of the Novomestsky Pivovar micro-brewery can be pre-booked for groups of 10 or more people. The tour only lasts 20 minutes, but makes an interesting addition to your visit.
Tours can be booked for anytime after 6pm and must be combined with a meal either before or afterwards. Tours cost 98czk (£3.25/€4/$5) per person and include a sample of the beer. Please state on the booking form if required. Advance reservations are essential.
