PERFORMANCE DETAILS

The highly atmospheric 'Advent Concert' at the National Theatre in Prague is an annual series of concerts performed by the National Theatre Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic Children’s Choir One.

The concerts are staged every Sunday in the build up to Christmas, and feature Jiri Teml's 'O Holy Night' and Jan Jakub Ryba's 'Czech Christmas Mass'.

Czech Christmas Mass can be a misleading name for a foreign audience, in that it is not a church service but simply soft, romantic and joyful pastoral music which tells the story of the nativity.

The Advent Concert is an important symbol of Christmas in Czechia. While concerts are staged in churches throughout the country, this staging at the National Theatre in Prague is the largest and most impressive.

The National Theatre is a stunning neo-Renaissance building dating from 1868-83. It sits majestically alongside the Vltava River, from where it is instantly recognisable on sunny days by its golden roof gleaming in the sunshine.

For Czech people, the National Theatre is the most important cultural institution in the country.
