Municipal House (Obecní dům) in Prague is the city's foremost Art Nouveau building, and one of the finest of its kind in Europe.

It is situated on Republic Square next to the Powder Gate Tower, one of the original entrances to the Old Town.

Municipal House contains a magnificent complex of rooms, including the grandest concert hall in Prague (Smetana Hall), an elegant modern Czech restaurant, a beer hall restaurant, a traditional café, the first American bar in Czechia, plus a suite of music salons and exhibition rooms.

It is a beautiful building from all aspects. Its exterior gleams with intricate stonework, gold trimmings, frescos, and stained glass windows.

Inside Municipal House, a huge marble staircase leads to the Smetana Concert Hall, an architectural masterpiece constructed of carved white stone and gold, and illuminated by hundreds of lights. Frescos by Karel Spillar adorn the walls.

Classical concerts in the Smetana boast the largest orchestras to play the city. Indeed Municipal House is home to the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.

All concerts listed on Prague Experience at Municipal House are held in the Smetana Hall, not a minor salon. View listings and book Prague concert tickets.

On the ground floor of Municipal House is the first-class Municipal House Restaurant, a delightful place to experience elegant 1920s style fine dining. Running along one full side of the restaurant, huge windows look out over Republic Square.

On the lower ground floor, Municipal House Beer Hall restaurant serves excellent traditional Czech fare in a lively atmosphere.

Next to the Beer Hall is the swish Tretter's American Bar. An ideal meeting point for pre-concert or pre-dinner drinks, Tretter's serves cocktails, spirits, beers, wines and sparkling wines.

Back at ground floor level, we also find the Municipal House Café, a traditional cafe serving fresh coffee and delicious cakes throughout the day.

Finally, exhibitions are held in some of the salons. These are listed in Prague events.

Municipal House opened in 1912, having been constructed on the site of the former Royal Court Palace.

On the 28th October 1918, the historic proclamation of the independent state of Czechoslovakia took place here.
