Public holiday in Prague. Czech State Day commemorates the dividing of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on this day in 1993.
Prague sightseeing and entertainment operate as normal. Shops have limited opening times.

On New Year's Day it is traditional to attend a classical concert in Prague, with concert halls such as Municipal House celebrating the start of the New Year with a special production. Indeed, performances of all kinds are popular. Advance booking is highly recommended as the best performances always sell out.

Wenceslas Square
New Year's Day Video Mapping

Times: 18.15, 19:15, 20:15
Prices: Free entry
This unique open-air video mapping show on New Year's Day turns the façade of the National Museum in Wenceslas Square into a display surface for video projection. Stand anywhere in the top half of the square for a good view.
There are three screenings, timed to ensure families with young children can attend: 18.15, 19:15 and 20:15.

Times: Daily 10:00-22:00
The Prague Christmas Markets light up the city, bringing locals and tourists together in a true 'winter wonderland' setting. Among the local food and drinks to sample are grilled sausages, hams on spits, pastries, Czech beer and hot mulled wine.

Prague State Opera Reopens
Prague State Opera Reopens

Following reconstruction, the Prague State Opera stages its first opera in several years, an uplifting performance of Fidelio by Ludwig van Beethoven. Thereafter, audiences can look forward to a varied programme of opera and ballet by Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Puccini, Rossini, Donizetti and Prokofiev.

Wenceslas Square
Jan Palach Day
Dates: 19 January 2020
Jan Palach, a young Czech student during the communist era who had set himself on fire in protest at the on-going Soviet invasion of August 1968, subsequently died on the 19th January 1969. Many Czech people, especially the older generation, make their way to the Memorial to the Victims of Communism near the statue at the top of Wenceslas Square, and to Olsanske Cemetery to lay flowers or to light a candle in his memory.
