The country commemorates the dividing of Czechoslovakia into Czechia and Slovakia on this day in 1993. Prague sightseeing and entertainment operate as normal. The Christmas markets are open. Jan Palach Day |

DATE: 20 January 2026 | | Jan Palach Day commemorates a young Czech student who set himself on fire in protest at the
Soviet invasion of August 1968, during the communist era. Palach subsequently died on the 19th January 1969. Czech people congregate at the Memorial to the Victims of Communism at the top of Wenceslas Square, and at Olsanske Cemetery, where they lay flowers or light a candle in his memory. | |
