| The Estates Theatre (Stavovské divadlo) in Prague opened in 1783. It is the oldest theatre in the city and its finest Neoclassical building. Indeed, it is one of the most beautiful historic theatres in Europe.
The unique charm of the Estates Theatre cannot be fully conveyed in pictures or words. Once inside, one almost feels the spiritual presence of the supremely talented musicians, directors, artists, playwrights, and composers who have passed through its doors.
The mainstay of the Estates Theatre is the operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The Estates Theatre is located in between Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, a mere two minutes' walk from either.
The Estates Theatre will be forever linked with Mozart, the musical genius whose life and works had such a profound impact on the city of Prague. Mozart stayed and worked in Prague on several occasions, crafting operas that would later be performed at the Estates Theatre.
In 1786, although the world premiere of The Marriage of Figaro had taken place in Vienna, it was in Prague at the Estates Theatre that it truly triumphed. Its success with Bohemian audiences led to Mozart being commissioned to compose Don Giovanni for the city.
In 1787, Mozart personally conducted the world premiere of Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre.
The season at the Estates Theatre runs from late August to June. It often starts with a run of Don Giovanni, in recognition of this historic event.
