| U Rudolfina is a no‑nonsense, traditional Czech pub located a few minutes’ walk from Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square.
U Rudolfina is split over two levels, with the largest area being the cellar, which is characterised by arched ceilings, plain plastered walls and dark wooden tables. The décor throughout is sparse and functional, shaped by years of regular use rather than by design. This is a distinctly old‑fashioned beer hall, where the emphasis is on beer and lively discussion.
U Rudolfina serves excellent Pilsner Urquell tank beer, delivered unpasteurised directly from the brewery in large, temperature‑controlled airtight tanks. This is the only beer on tap, and waiters serve it continuously to tables in a fast and efficient manner, often before you have even finished the previous one – a traditional Czech pub experience.
Food is of secondary importance and may not be to everyone’s taste, but for those who wish to sample it there is a choice of classic Czech dishes such as goulash, roast meats, schnitzel, sausages and dumplings, alongside simpler pub plates intended merely to accompany beer rather than the other way around. Prices are reasonable for the location.
The atmosphere at U Rudolfina is often lively, particularly in the evenings, when the rooms fill quickly with a mix of locals and visitors. Lighting is warm but subdued, and seating is arranged communally in places, encouraging a straightforward, social style of drinking.
A more modern Czech pub, Potrefená Husa Platnéřská, is situated just around the corner, and the contrast between it and U Rudolfina could hardly be more different. In our opinion, try both: enjoy a couple of Pilsners at U Rudolfina first, then head over to Potrefená Husa Platnéřská for a meal and a few Staropramen beers.
