| U Zlatého Tygra (Golden Tiger) is a famous, traditional Czech pub located on Husova Street, in the heart of the Old Town in Prague.
It occupies part of a medieval burgher house whose origins date back to the 14th century. Despite later Renaissance and Baroque alterations, much of its early structure remains intact, including its most distinctive feature: the Gothic cellars that still form the heart of the pub today.
U Zlatého Tygra is best known for its unwavering focus on beer. It serves excellent Pilsner Urquell tank beer, delivered unpasteurised directly from the brewery in large, temperature‑controlled airtight tanks. This is the only light beer on tap.
Service follows long‑established local custom, with half‑litre glasses arriving steadily unless a clear signal is given to stop (typically by placing a beer mat over the glass).
Food plays a strictly supporting role, consisting of simple Czech pub dishes and classic beer accompaniments, intended to suit the drinking rather than distract from it. For a local Czech speciality, order some beer cheese. U Zlatého Tygra was the first pub in the country to serve it regularly.
U Zlatého Tygra has low arched ceilings, heavy wooden tables and benches, and plainly finished walls, creating an atmosphere that feels dense and lived‑in rather than curated. It is common to share tables with strangers, contributing to a lively, sometimes crowded environment that reflects typical Czech pub culture.
The building itself adds significantly to the experience. The narrow street‑front entrance gives little hint of the depth of the interior spaces, which extend back through vaulted rooms into the older cellar areas. Decorative elements are minimal and largely incidental, consisting mainly of historical photographs, brewery signage and small references to notable former patrons. The fabric of the building, particularly in the cellars, is allowed to speak for itself.
The golden tiger emblem – set above the entrance – has been associated with the building since the early 18th century, lending the pub both its name and a strong visual identity rooted in Prague’s long tradition of sign‑named inns.
U Zlatého Tygra often fills soon after opening, so arriving later may involve waiting for a seat. Václav Havel, the first Czech president, was a regular customer and, in 1994, brought US President Bill Clinton here to drink beer and enjoy an informal dinner. |
