| The Prague Castle By Night & Alchemy Tour explores the historical tales and mysteries associated with Prague, the "magical capital" of Old Europe.
Tip for Visitors: The tour features myths and legends, and visits the places mentioned in Dan Brown’s The Secret of Secrets.
The tour starts near Old Town Square. Our guide leads us through the cobbled back streets of the Old Town and the Jewish Quarter to uncover dark historical tales, including that of the Golem, the “Jewish Frankenstein.” As we head towards the Vltava River, we learn about the renaissance of Prague during the reign of Emperor Charles IV. His ambitious expansion of the city relied heavily on astrology and esotericism, leaving nothing to chance and helping shape the Prague we admire today. Next, we take a tram (ticket not included) up to Prague Castle.
Set on a hill and illuminated at night, Prague Castle is a majestic sight dominating the city’s skyline. Without the daytime crowds, it takes on a romantic, eerie, and undeniably magical atmosphere.
We walk through the castle’s grand squares to see its palaces, churches, and ancient monuments, including St. Vitus Cathedral. We visit Golden Lane, where generations of artisans worked from the Middle Ages, and where the art of alchemy was practised. We hear stories from the reigns of King Wenceslas, Charles IV, and Emperor Rudolf II, when scientists, artists and magicians were drawn to Prague from across Europe, and when Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler practised astronomy.
Prague Castle also offers beautiful panoramic views over the city: summer sunsets can be glorious, while in winter the city dances with lights.
Moving on, we enter the Castle District (Hradčany), a beautiful area surrounding Prague Castle that is unknown to many tourists, yet home to many of the city's secrets. Here, we visit the "New World" (Nový Svět), a cobblestoned street full of unique architecture; Strahov Monastery, where we hear the tale of the Devil’s Bible; Černin Palace; Domeček, a former secret police and Gestapo prison; Loreta; and finally St. Wenceslas’ Vineyard.
The tour ends in the Lesser Town.
