The Prague Castle By Night & Alchemy Tour seeks out the historical tales, mysteries and alchemy associated with Prague, the 'magical capital' of Old Europe. Note: If you are captivated by Dan Brown’s latest novel, 'The Secret of Secrets', this is the tour for you. It explores the same myths and legends, and visits many of the fascinating places featured in the book.
The tour starts near Old Town Square, from where our guide leads us through the cobbled back streets of the Old Town and Jewish Quarter, and down to the Vltava River, to discover dark historical tales connected to these ancient areas of the city. Crossing over the river, we ride a tram through the picturesque Lesser Town up to Prague Castle.
Set on a hill, and illuminated at night, Prague Castle is a majestic sight. It dominates the city's skyline, and without the daytime tourists, takes on a romantic, eery, and undeniably magical atmosphere.
We walk through the castle's grand squares to see its palaces, churches and ancient monuments, and through Golden Lane, where generations of artisans worked from the middle ages. We hear stories from the reigns of King Wenceslas and Emperor Charles IV, and from the rule of Emperor Rudolf II, when scientists, artists and magicians were drawn to Prague from all over Europe. Men like Tycho de Brahe and Johannes Kepler practised astronomy, others practised alchemy and magic. From Prague Castle participants can also enjoy beautiful, panoramic views over the city: the summer sunsets can be glorious, while in winter the city dances with lights.
Next, we visit the Castle District surrounding Prague Castle, a picturesque area left unexplored by most tourists. And yet it is where many of the city's secrets originate. We explore places like Nový Svět (the New World) - a picturesque cobblestone street full of unique architecture, Strahov Monastery, Černin Palace, Loreta, Domeček (secret police and Gestapo prison), St Wenceslas’ Vineyard, and Wallenstein Palace.
