Public Holiday. New Year's Day is also celebrated as Czech State Day in Czechia. The country commemorates the dividing of Czechoslovakia into Czechia and Slovakia on this day in 1993. Prague sightseeing and entertainment operate as normal. The Christmas markets are open. Small to medium sized shops are open, but large shops (over 200m2) are closed. | |

| New Year & Festive Concerts

| From New Year's Day to the Twelfth Night (5th January), it is traditional to attend a classical concert in Prague. The grand concert halls, palaces and churches welcome in the New Year with special performances. Advance booking is essential. | |

| Three Kings Procession on Charles Bridge | |

| In celebration of the journey undertaken by the Magi to Bethlehem to greet the baby Jesus, Three Kings dressed in regal attire parade on camels through the centre of Prague. The procession sets out from the Lesser Town Square (Malostranské náměstí) at 15:30, travels across Charles Bridge, and reaches the Old Town Square at 16:45. The parade ends on the stage at the Christmas Markets on the square, where the Three Kings present gifts to the Infant Jesus. The music relayed through speakers on the square is Czech Christmas Mass by Jakub Jan Ryba. | |

| Jan Palach Day | |

| Jan Palach Day commemorates a young Czech student who set himself on fire in protest at the
Soviet invasion of August 1968, during the communist era. Palach carried out his extraordinary act of self-immolation on 16th January 1969, and subsequently died three days later. People congregate at the Memorial to the Victims of Communism at the top of Wenceslas Square, near the horse, and at Olsanske Cemetery, where they lay flowers or light a candle in his memory. | |
