Struggle for Liberty & Democracy Day - Public Holiday

Public Holiday. Commemorates the student demonstration against Nazi occupation in 1939, and more famously the mass demonstration that started the Velvet Revolution in 1989.

From late November 2025 to early January 2026, a wide range of Christmas concerts are staged in Prague. Watch Prague's leading musicians perform in beautiful, festively decorated churches and historic buildings, such as the Klementinum, Spanish Synagogue, Liechtenstein Palace, and St. Nicholas, St. Salvator and St. Martin churches.

As dusk turns to night, a lamplighter dressed in period costume makes his way along Charles Bridge lighting the historical "gas lamps" that line both sides of the bridge. It's a bit of theatre, but when better than Christmas to recall a custom that dates from the pre-electric age.
